MGS Logo

Look what I found! A former co-worker of mine at Digital Kitchen, Chris Abbas, updated his reel. He's an amazing designer, and I thought I'd share my personal favorite piece that I saw (and actually helped on, a little!) in production at DK.

Check out the rest of his stuff! Really inspiring!

Edit: whoops, looks like vimeo plus won't let me embed. Here's the direct link.

Last Year

So, this time last year, I was just beginning my summer internship at Digital Kitchen creating assets for logo reveals and TV spots. Mainly, I assisted the designers in viz dev. I learned a lot about design and breaking down my own personal process - using 3D as a means to an end, and not being a slave to one type of work flow.

These were for the Microsoft game studio logo reveal. Just a few roughs in 3D with some bright, fun colors.

These were created for Nickelodeon? I think? I don't even think I remember. It was only part of the 'rough' stage anyhow. I think they went in a less abstract direction.

This was the most heavy-lifting I had done. Each frame is a different model - giving this a sort of stop-motion feel. Sadly, they didn't let any of us in on the real name of the product (Kinect), and because the process was so lengthy, they went with 2D instead.

Here's the final version (completed mostly by Sean Dekkers).

There you have it!

Rough Draft

I made this a few posts back, and one of the designers at Digital Kitchen (Sean Dekkers) said it would be a cool animation. So, I whipped this up in about an hour. A proof of concept of sorts with maybe half of the animation principles applied (seriously, the hands are all kinds of messed up). But! I'll post it anyway as a part of my ~process~ for this upcoming piece.

I think I'll actually go back and "design" the character a little more - give him some personality. He's got a bit of a flare at the moment, I think I'll try and capitalize on that.

Hello Shiny

I've been learning a lot about a different kind of process here at my internship. Turbosmooth and shiny and not all parts of the boat need to look like a boat. It's a bit different than the pipeline I'm used to... the whole "What's This For?" DigiPen process. The question still exists, but the answers are a lot more vague and malleable.

I'm starting to feel like I'm more of a work horse than I am a creative force to be reckoned with. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Maybe I just need to learn more about my own personal aesthetic and just make shit for the sake of cool-looking. Serving no particular purpose. So! With that in mind; Here's something shiny!

I made this in my free time at DK - though I haven't had a whole lot of it. I've been working on a project that I actually signed an NDA for! How exciting!

Aquarium

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention I got an internship!! At Digital Kitchen, no less! It's an amazing emmy-winning-and-nominated studio that does a lot of commercials and trailer-type work. I'm just a lowly intern, but I'm really enjoying my time here and the people. It's been a slow start, but graduation is TOMORROW, so I think once I have that out of my hair, I can really dig in a learn a lot!

Here's a little something I did on like.. day two when we had a bit too much down time. Just after effects and particles. (You can see I used the seaweed technique on the Persona project for school - which my brother is currently putting music on, so that's something to look forward to!)
